Toku Kawata moved to Atlanta, GA, in 2021 and opened his piano studio in the historic Grant Park neighborhood in 2022. Concurrently, he is a piano faculty at Levine Music in Washington DC since 2016. He has performed in the U.S., France, and Japan, including his solo debut at Carnegie Hall in 2010. Dr. Kawata has performed the Rachmaninoff Piano Concerto No. 2 and Mozart Piano Concerto No. 20 K. 466 with the Boulder Symphony. After winning the Eleanor B. Weiler and Mildred B. Fame Piano Scholarships, Dr. Kawata spent time in Paris, France, conducting research at the Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique and the Bibliothèque Nationale de France for his doctoral work.
Dr. Kawata obtained his Doctorate of Music Arts in piano performance from the University of Colorado Boulder. He received his Master’s degree and Bachelor’s degrees from the University of North Texas and the University of Central Arkansas respectively. He received the Louis & Harold Price Foundation Fellowship while spending three summers at the Aspen Music Festival and School studying with pianist Ann Schein.
