Program Info: In this session, we’ll explore the skills and knowledge piano pedagogy students need and how to develop them in pre-collegiate training.
Huu Mai, Artist-in-Residence in Piano at Kennesaw State University (Arts.Kennesaw.edu/Music), dedicates much of his life's work towards the advancement of music education. A passionate believer in passing on the gift of music, his students have been recognized nationally and internationally. He is a frequent guest-lecturer at music conferences and is an active adjudicator throughout the southeastern United States. In 2019, Mr. Mai received the Georgia Music Teachers Association “Teacher of the Year” Award and was a recipient of Steinway and Sons “Top Teacher Award” in 2019 and 2020. He has performed as soloist with orchestras including the Georgia Symphony Orchestra, the Atlanta Wind Symphony, and the Gwinnett Symphony Orchestra among others.

Program Info: Ingrid is very well known for authoring collections for Alfred Publishing, including Keys to Artistic Performance, and Keys to Stylistic Mastery. In this session, Professor Clarfield will share her strategies and teaching philosophies that continue to change. New and experienced teachers will acquire new ideas or reinforce old ones with a variety of teaching suggestions - technical, musical, psychological and philosophical. These suggestions and musical examples will encompass the entire alphabet from A to Z!

Who Came Up With These Fingerings, Anyway?!

Program Info: Have you ever thought about who came up with the traditional keyboard scale fingerings and why we teach them? We’ve all had students who correctly played scales with the hands separately only to stumble when they attempted to play the hands together. Of course, the coordination difficulties are always a hurdle, but could this problem also result from awkward fingering demands?
Carol Wallace Payne, NCTM, holds a PhD in Music Education/Piano Pedagogy from Florida State University and has taught in the music divisions of Pensacola State College, the University of West Florida, Florida State University, and until recently as Director of the Music Preparatory School at Clayton State University. Carol is an active member of MTNA, having held Local and State leadership positions in the Florida and Georgia Music Teachers Associations.
Carol presented research at two MTNA National Conferences and was scheduled to present an hour-long session at the 2020 MTNA National Conference in Chicago (canceled due to COVID-19). She has been a presenter at local associations and state conferences in Florida, Georgia, and Virginia. Her articles have appeared in The American Music Teacher and Clavier Companion. Carol performed extensively as a soloist and chamber musician, and has recorded four compact discs.
